Animal Health Philosophy

Animal Health Philosophy

We recognize that the health of our family and our customers, depends on the health of our soil and our animals. That is why, even though we are not certified organic, we do our best to farm that way. For our plants and soil, that means getting rid of weeds through pulling, sheep grazing, torching or spraying with vinegar. To improve our soils, we use the ever-present supply of manure and compost.  To get rid of pests, we use chickens, turkeys, insecticidal soap and diatomaceous earth.  Last but not least, for our animals we use natural fly sprays, herbs, essential oils and homeopathy whenever possible.

In the animals we eat, milk, or get eggs from, we do not want the residuals that antibiotics, vaccinations and chemical wormers leave behind. Also, for the overall health of all of our animals, we want the most gentle, effective products to maintain, prevent and cure any ills they might have.

For worming in all our animals, we use garlic in their food, diatomaceous earth when needed, neem oil for topical pest control, and homeopathy. All these treatments are intended to make the body an un-hospitable host to parasites. They do not necessarily kill every parasite within the body, but instead build the body's immune system to be able to fight off parasites and make them not want to make our animals bodies, their own home sweet home.

For immunizing purposes, we use homeopathic nosodes, which employ the same principles as vaccinations. They are highly diluted nano particles of certain pathogens, that trigger the body's immune response to build antibodies against that particular disease, without the side effects that some vaccines can cause. Here is a link to some very informative articles on the pros and cons of conventional vaccines, and some alternatives and guidelines. I highly recommend reading some of these articles for a different perspective into animal health.

For treatment of illnesses, injuries, mental and behavioral issues, we again turn to homeopathy, and have had many successes in doing so. We are not averse to using conventional methods, if absolutely necessary to save the life of one of our animals, but when at all possible, we choose to find alternative methods to safely and effectively treat our animals that are food sources, working animals and pets.
